What is an actuator?

The linear actuator is an electromechanical device that replaces hydraulic and pneumatic systems. The electric actuator performs a push-pull action, extending and retracting the mechanical piston via the electric motor. Compared to hydraulic systems, linear actuators are much easier to install thanks to their low weight, compact structure, and ease of use. The lack of external mechanical components such as pumps and pipes significantly reduces the space occupied and increases the efficiency of the system, as it does not require constant maintenance.

Back to the naval industry, electric actuators and screw jacks can be used to perform many different tasks.

In shipyards, they are used in AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles). They are positioned under the loading platform, allowing it to raise, lower, and tilt the loaded material as desired. High-performance linear actuator models are used for these solutions, and technical measures are taken to increase the durability of the piece, such as coatings for saline environments or resin coatings.

Onboard, actuators often serve to automate certain movements that would otherwise have to be performed manually. Linear actuators therefore assist on-board personnel, making their work less strenuous and drastically reducing risks for operators.
